holidays

How many times have you returned from your holiday and forgot to take any meaningful photographs? Or perhaps you spent hours each day, snapping away only to end up with one thousand useless pictures? It doesn’t matter how expensive that camera cost, or how many zillion pixels it may have, you still need to get the basics right to create a great picture. Here we look at the different techniques and subject matter you should be thinking about on your next vacation.

Don’t Center Your Main Subject

When you are trying to capture your buddy or best girl in the camera lens, avoid centering them in the picture. The dead space around them will detract from any possible quality, Try to focus on them and move the view to the left a little. The background will remain out of focus, but you will be creating an interesting contrast to the main subject. This technique works with both live and still subject matter.

Fill The Frame!

If your subject doesn’t make quite the impact on the photo that you would have hoped for, try to get closer and see if you can really increase the size until your lens is full. You may think a hard to spot subject is clever, but your audience will not be impressed whatsoever.

Be Ready To Snap!

If you are on the beach or at a restaurant, forget about the planned cheesy smiley photos. They always look forced and corny, because they are! Try and capture the real ambience and keep an eye out for any potential drama waiting to be recorded. Even someone spilling their drink is a classic opportunity for your camera skills. Capture the surprise on their face and the mocking laughter of your friends as the liquid splashes down the victim’s shirt. Take as many photos as you can, you never know when the magical one may appear next.

Flash Tips

If you can help it, try to limit the use of your flash when inside a house or restaurant. Sometimes you really need the artificial light to help you out, but if you can manage it, try to use the natural shades. The harsh effect of an ultra bright light can kill the natural tones of a potential masterpiece. Try taking a photo in a slightly darkened room, with and without a flash and see the difference. When you are outdoors you can reverse this philosophy and use the flash in broad daylight. On a bright day, the sun can cast many shadows and using the flash can minimize these as well as flatten out any bright contrast effects.

Natural Help

Sometimes you miss the obvious when looking too hard for a great holiday photo opportunity. When you are out on a rainy evening, yes they happen on holidays too, try and focus on the ground reflection instead of your mates posing away. You can often capture a magical type of mirror effect and may be quite surprised. This is especially true if there are colored lights captured in your masterpiece.
